Two months ago we had the pleasure of working with Tailored Sweets for a bohemian Strawberry Lemonade Inspiration shoot. It was then that we realized it is possible to mix art with baking! Not only were the desserts she brought jaw-dropping but at the end of the shoot we all snuck a bite and I can say first hand I have never had such a tasty cake pop in my life! Q: How did you get into creating your dessert boutique?
A: Some of my favorite childhood memories include me covered in flour, sugar, and chocolate “helping” my Mom make one of her famous chocolate cakes. I always loved measuring, sifting, stirring, and (most of all) tasting the yummy treats we made together. As I grew up, I never grew out of my love for baking. After my wedding, my husband and I moved to San Diego leaving my mom and the rest of our family far behind in Kentucky. Feeling homesick, I began baking more than ever. I realized baking not only made me happy, but it made others happy as well – something my Mom had discovered many years before. So, I decided to quit my day job and dedicate my time to creating delicious desserts.

Q: What differentiates you from your peers?
A: Remember sneaking a finger full of cookie dough from the bowl while your mom wasn’t looking? It was just a little bite, but so yummy! Tailored Sweets focuses on mini desserts that are not only cute, but more importantly taste amazing! You can have a small piece of indulgence without destroying your diet. We also create perfectly coordinated, fully customizable dessert buffets that can be tailored to your event.

Q: Where do you get your inspiration?
A: I get inspiration from several different places: desserts in restaurants, magazines, online, recipes that were passed down from my mom, etc. The world is full of delicious desserts and it’s so fun to try out new recipes. Of course, the best part is taste testing!

Q: What is most satisfying about your job?
A: Knowing that I have the power to make a couples special day even sweeter is amazing. I love it when all the dessert station is completely bare at the end of the night. That way I know it was delicious!

Q: What are some trends in the dessert department for 2011?
A: Cake pops are the new cupcakes! They are portable and amazingly moist plus, the perfect addition to any dessert buffet. Whoopie pies are also a big trend right now. A whoopie pie consists of creamy filling sandwiched between two soft cake-cookies (think a larger and softer oreo cookie). And last but not least, Dessert Buffets are taking over the candy buffet. Why offer your guests one dessert when you can offer them a delicious spread of several desserts? Plus, a dessert buffet can serve as decoration and a way to personalize your event.
