Vintage

We had so much fun planning this vintage vegan wedding! Veronica and Mack are one of the sweetest most caring california couples we have ever met! They are vegan and were introduced to each other by a mutual friend because they were vegan, little did they know they would end up getting married! They wanted their entire wedding to be vegan from the appetizers to dessert and we were able to make it happen. We also had a wonderful time with the styling of this wedding. Most of the decor was DIY and the rest was vintage! Every detail was carefully considered from the lace runners to hand made fabric yo-yo’s that covered every inch of the wedding to the the sock monkey pie toppers, it was a California DIY Dream.

Q & A with the Bride :

*What was your inspiration for your wedding? Or where did you get inspiration from?

Mack and I are both fortunate enough to have enormous families that are tightly-knit, which often results in wonderful family gatherings with tons
of people, amazing food, and lots of love. We wanted our wedding to be just like another relaxed family party, only difference being that I’d be walking around in a big ol’ white dress. At the same time, we both love the ocean, so we knew we wanted to hold the celebration near the beach; this was an extra bonus for my out-of-town families who don’t get to see the ocean as often as we Californians do. Finally, I wanted the entire event to reflect our design aesthetic, which tends toward a antique, handmade, eclectic feel. Some of our ideas didn’t seem like they would pair together well at first, but to my delight everything came together beautifully!

*Tell us about your ceremony decor.

We wanted to keep the entire ceremony on the simple side, and this was reflected in the decor as well. When we first saw the tree on the lawn of our venue, we knew it needed to be a focal point. It was Krystel’s wonderful idea to hang pretty things from the tree, and I think it worked out beautifully! For seating, we chose to rent simple white benches from our florist, Tara Wheaton. The benches were crafted by her husband for their daughter’s wedding, which coincidentally was also held on the lawn of the Ole Hanson Beach Club. They were lovely, and added a country feel to the ceremony. Finally, Tara had placed hanging mason jars full of lovely blooms down the aisle, which added a pop of color.

*How did it feel to walk down the aisle?

Walking down the aisle was one of the most incredible experiences of my life. We were lucky enough to have a friend drive us to the ceremony in a pristine 1930 navy blue Cadillac. My dad and I were driven directly to the site, so I walked right out of the car and down the aisle. It must have
een unexpected, as we were given a standing ovation! What was most incredible to me, though, was how overwhelmingly happy I was – I felt as if I could burst! Seeing the faces of so many loved ones who had traveled so far was amazing, trumped only by the sight of Mack, standing there waiting. It was unbelievable!

*Tell us a bit about your reception decor/style.

For reception decor, we wanted to capture a vintage eclectic style that also warm, homey, and casual. We knew we wanted to incorporate lots of handmade items as well, as well as old family photographs. I’m very nostalgic, and wanted to make sure that our family histories were reflected
in some way. We decided to create a memory table, which gave us the chance to display our favorite family photos. It was a charming way to introduce
our backgrounds to the guests and help our close family members to feel included. Meanwhile, I had been dreaming of having fabric yo-yos everywhere
throughout the wedding. Unfortunately, yo-yos are very time consuming, and I found myself biting off more than I could chew. Luckily, I have incredible (and talented) family and friends – so many of them spent hours sewing them for us, and some of them even traveled across the country to be a part of our wedding! My cousin Lauren sewed our ring bearer pillow for us just days before the event, and my mom glued silk flowers and pink tulle to our paper umbrellas. My maid-of-honor Gwen, however, truly took the cake when it came to craft projects: she created the guest book, the place cards, zillions of yo-yos, and some truly amazing sock monkey cake toppers.

*Tell us about your vegan menu.

For the meal, we searched far and wide for the perfect vegan caterer. We knew we wanted food that was fresh, seasonal, and creative; and something that didn’t scream “vegan” (i.e. Tofurkey). Luckily, Rose Wade Events stepped up to the plate, and really did an incredible job. Their chef had grown up with two vegans in his life, and learned to cook great vegan food at an early age. He created some truly unique and delicious flavors that
didn’t disappoint. It was a hit for sure.

*Why did you choose a Vegan menu for all of your guests?

As much guff as we got along the way about choosing to serve a vegan meal to our guests, I wouldn’t have done it any other way. Mack and I met in the first place because we’re both vegan, so this lifestyle is something that’s deeply ingrained in our relationship. At the same time, we both feel that vegan food is *just food* – it just so happens not to have any animal products present. It would have been a disservice to our beliefs and our way of life to serve meat at our wedding, so we chose not to. And you know what? Everyone loved it.

*What was your favorite part of your wedding?

My favorite part of our wedding was how seamlessly our families joined together. We were worried that a group as varied as ours wouldn’t blend well, but to our delight, they did. My relatives from Louisville, Kentucky danced alongside Mack’s Lebanese family to foot-stomping Arabic music, and our friends from Philadelphia do-si-doed with the Venezuelan side of the family. It was amazing, and everyone had *so* much fun.

*What was your favorite decor detail at your wedding?

Hands down, my favorite detail were Gwen’s amazing sock monkey cake toppers. Just a short time before our wedding, she had asked what other things we could use help with. I explained that we had wanted a cake topper of some sort, but between being burned out from work and wedding planning, I just couldn’t come up with anything that could be done in any reasonable amount of time. Gwen, clearly not willing to let my secret monkey cake topper dreams die, took over the project, and within a few short days had created two insanely adorable sock monkeys dressed like Mack & me. They even have wire inside them so they’re completely poseable. Amazing. I’m still in awe of the whole thing.

Kelly & Mike’s wedding and all of the lovely details was featured on WEDDING CHICKS!

Kelly and Mike’s wedding at the gorgeous Mt. Woodson Castle combined vintage and rustic elegance in a perfectly unique way.

The ceremony was held in front of the castle and set the tone for the rest of the evening. From the gorgeous bridesmaids in the floor length purple gowns to the groomsmens bow ties to the adorable DIY Here comes the bride sign, every detail was in unison.

After the ceremony guests stepped foot inside of the castle to begin cocktail hour. They were greeted by escort cards tied onto vintage keys and strung across the entrance to create an adorable DIY cocktail welcome display representative of the couple complete with nicknacks, flowers in vintage bottles, pictures of the couple and family, and their moss initials.

Soon the guests headed out to the front lawn for the reception with the cutest lemonade stand ever,  the guests enjoyed purple lemonade and were able to take their lemonade jars to the bar to personalize them with their own choice of shots or soda. The mason jars also doubled as favors for the guests. Some of our favorite accents at the reception were the purple wildflower centerpieces, candles aglow on wooden stumps, burlap runners, and the delicious dessert buffet .

The guests danced the night away inside of the candle lit castle. It was the perfect ending to this fairytale wedding!

This DIY Ranch Wedding was so full of love and surprises! I adore this couple and it was such a pleasure to coordinate their special day! Our favorite surprise was Jared surprising Sophie with their first dance directly after the ceremony. Not only did they dance, everyone did!  A field of lovers dancing, it was truly a beautiful moment. Something out of a spectacular musical! Want to know more? Grab a cup of coffee, get comfy, and read all about this fabulous wedding from the brides perspective below!

♥ Details from the Bride:

We both have large families, large friend groups, and we work with a large youth group. We knew we couldn’t host everyone the way we would like to, so we divided up the day in a slightly unique way. We had a ceremony that was open invitation, a family dinner to host our families (and some people who had traveled), and a dancing and dessert reception in the evening for family and friends.
CEREMONY: The ceremony and family dinner was at Wildwood Ranch, a Salvation Army camp in Ramona, CA, where close family friends live and work. I wanted to get married under a tree for the simplicity and beauty of being outdoors. Jared knew this, and proposed under a tree, so I’m so glad we found a ceremony location under a tree. The rustic feel fit both of our styles. We chose an open field for the ceremony so we weren’t limited in space. We made it BYOB style – “Bring Your Own Blanket”. People filled in the field with blankets, lawn chairs, umbrellas, even a tent! It gave the whole ceremony a laid back and celebratory atmosphere. There was no stuffy wedding feeling…people even cheered when I walked down the aisle! During communion time someone told us it felt like a music festival.
WEDDING PARTY and FAMILY: Instead of having our bridesmaids and groomsmen all walk down the aisle and stand next to us (there were 21 of them total!), we just had our siblings stand with us as witnesses. The rest of our friends helped serve communion to the guests and lead worship. We crafted our ceremony very intentionally. To symbolize the uniting of our families we gathered around a small, unplanted tree and each person in our immediate family dropped in a scoop of dirt. We wanted to acknowledge the support of our family as we grow together in marriage. The apple tree is planted near where we got married and we’ll be able to watch it grow over the years.
SURPRISES: Even though I spent months planning each part of the wedding, Jared (my now husband) managed to sneak in surprises all day. The biggest was that our first dance happened directly after the ceremony. At first I thought the wrong song played for our exit, but he smiled and said “Did you think I could wait to dance with you until tonight?” We love dancing together and it was an amazing moment to be united in marriage and dancing together immediately. (The song was “You Are The Best Thing” by Ray LaMontagne). The guests knew it was coming and everyone was invited to join in the dancing. We were so surrounded by love and joy those four minutes. There were even trumpets that popped out of the crowd like the wedding scene in Love Actually!
RECEPTION: Our reception was at Marina Village in San Diego. We didn’t want a beach or nautical wedding even in San Diego, and the wood paneled room actually continued the rustic feel of the wedding while we gave our guests a view of the beautiful harbor. We used wood slices, tin cans, mason jars, vintage items, and candles all mixed together. The majority of our flowers were planted, and many people took them home afterwards. Jared’s favorite animal is an owl, so I was thrilled to find those adorable owls (they’re salt and pepper shakers) on etsy.com.
GUESTBOOK: Our version of a guestbook was a patchwork quilt where our guests signed fabric squares. It will be sewn together into a quilt we’ll have forever in our home together. It’s a beautiful collection of joyful messages and wisdom from those who were a part of the day. Our friends helped supply the desserts while an incredibly talented friend catered the more savory food. She created an amazing menu and used all local and organic ingredients. We used bamboo plates and flatware, and biodegradable cups.
DANCE, DANCE, DANCE: We knew we wanted a reception with lots of dancing. But we still had no idea how much dancing there would be. Our friends kept the dance floor filled past capacity the entire night. The remarks I keep getting after the wedding was “that was the best dance party I’ve ever been to” or “I’ve never had so much fun at a wedding reception.”
THE DRESS: My dress was handmade by Chris Gennero ! I couldn’t find “The Dress” anywhere, and I couldn’t spend much on a wedding dress. It was important to me to have an ethically made wedding dress and I loved being able to support a local designer. It’s actually made out of shower curtains from Anthropologie!
BOUQUET: I knew my whole life I wanted my mom to make my wedding bouquet. The bouquet was wrapped in a handkerchief from my grandmother (she gave one to each granddaughter who was getting married, and left this one for me when she passed away). Inside my mom wrapped a heart necklace that belonged to her grandmother, and then her mom (my grandmother). It was such a personal way to keep both grandmothers with me for the day.
JEWELRY: I made jewelry for my bridesmaids from the paper beads made by women in Rwanda at an organization (Ndengera) that Jared has visited and is very important to our church and to us. My own necklace had pearls and one gray paper bead. It was another way of including others (across the world!) in our wedding.
IT TAKES A COMMUNITY: Our friends got involved with nearly every aspect of the day. Jared lived in an amazing house at the time, and his housemates helped shape so much of the day – they were artistic inspiration, the DJ, the emcee, the caterer, and the videographer. My roommate designed the invitations, another friend did the calligraphy. A collection of friends played the music at the ceremony. A coworker made our wedding cake. A friend ran a photo booth, filled with silly props. David Blakeman, our photographer, is a friend from Arizona drove out to be part of our wedding. This made our wedding an amazing community effort – not just “our” or “my” day, but a day for everyone to celebrate our marriage together. Krystel and the staff of Couture Events did an amazing job pulling together all the various DIY elements to make the day run so smoothly.

Ready for Gorgeous Vintage Glam?

Kyra and Johnny are some of the sweetest, most wonderful people I have ever known and it was such a privileged and honor to be their wedding coordinator. I went to highschool with Kyra and college with Johnny, when they started dating I knew it was a perfect match! They are the epitome of class and elegance, while also being the definition of fun and fabulous. Love this couple and their incredible wedding!

The couple was married at the gorgeous Admiral Kidd Club overlooking the San Diego skyline. Photography by  the fantastic Stephanie Fay of Stephanie Fay Photography who also shot their Vintage Glam engagement session that I posted a few months ago. Stephanie and her husband (second shooter) did an amazing job of capturing every moment of the day.  They also took the couple to the Hotel Del Coronado after the wedding to get some amazing beach photos!

About BHLDN:

An understated word with significant meaning charmed us. And so began, BHLDN.

Inspired by the Dutch word for “to keep,” as well as countless tales from family and friends of the extraordinary weddings they’d been part of, we began dreaming up something new.

Our roots are with Anthropologie, so a passion for experience and creating one-of-a-kind moments runs deep. But our offering speaks more to the not-so-everyday occasions—ours is a voice that celebrates a woman’s most anticipated milestones. And one that gives tradition a twist.

We want, more than anything, to help a woman create an event that reflects her own unique perspective… to a tee. We want to give a bride that edit she’s been searching for—with heirloom-quality wedding gowns, artisanal hair adornments, footwear, and lingerie. And we want happy bridesmaids—in mix-and-match frocks with rich hues and unexpected details.

But it goes beyond the dress. Our goal, and the reason we drape, fold, bustle, and stitch, is to start a conversation with our customer—to build a resource where she can come to find inspiration and to share with those closest to her, as well as our broader coterie. BHLDN’s story is unfolding; and we’ll look to our customer for cues and guidance going forward.

There are no checkboxes. No fill-in-the-blanks. On the contrary, we think a moment should be as layered and dimensional as the woman standing within it.

Be you. Be loved. BHLDN
